Initiation into Contemporary Witchcraft

Initiation ~ the action of admitting someone into a secret or obscure society or group,
typically with a ritual.

Within contemporary witchcraft, the act of initiation recognises the neophyte as a witch and priest (or priestess) of this tradition.  It is from this point that training into the Alexandrian tradition of witchcraft officially commences, and where the focus is on three aspects: vocation, dedication and service.  As such, the neophyte considering initiation should carefully consider the level of commitment and dedication they wish to and are able to make prior to formally requesting initiation into the Temple of the Dark Moon.

Applications for initiation should be emailed to the Temple’s High Priestess and contain the following information:

  • What is the underlying reason for your choice of the Alexandrian Tradition as your spiritual path?

  • What are your expectations regarding the personal benefits that the Alexandrian Tradition of Witchcraft can provide you?

  • How do you plan to contribute to the development and preservation of the Alexandrian Tradition of Witchcraft?

Prior to submitting one’s application, it is strongly recommended that the neophyte consider their ability to dedicate and devote the appropriate time needed to fully focus their attention on the teachings that will be provided as well as to undertaking in the rituals.

As such, all initiates are expected to be able to attend coven training sessions at least twice a month, in addition to attendance at sabbats and esbats (which may coincide with training days).

In order to achieve the level of dedication and discipline required, it will be necessary for the neophyte to cease all magical-religious activity (whether in person or online) in order to focus solely on the training that will then be provided to them.

Other points to note about requesting initiation:

  • Initiation and any subsequent elevation through the degrees is a privilege, not a right. As such, initiation is not offered lightly, nor should it be expected by the neophyte.

  • As the Alexandrian Tradition is a religion of polarities (i.e., masculine and feminine), initiations are conducted in line of this concept regardless of personal gender identifications or sexual preferences. Therefore, to become an Alexandrian initiate, one must be initiated by a properly prepared and authorized Alexandrian High Priestess or Priest in a cross-gendered initiation.

  • Initiation into the Temple of the Dark Moon is subject to suitability and availability within the coven.

  • It is not possible to “self-initiate” into the Alexandrian tradition of witchcraft.

Some points that the Temple considers:

  • The energetic chemistry between the existing members and prospective initiates.

  • Respect given to the hierarchal structure of contemporary witchcraft.

  • Personal dedication to learn and understand what is being taught.

Only initiation requests from those over 21 years of age will be considered.

“Witchcraft is a religion; its rituals are celebrations of life and actions of worship.” ~ Stewart Farrar
